What Happens During a Consultation?

Every custom project begins with a one-on-one consultation. Some clients arrive with a clear vision, others with only a feeling or a few reference images. Either way, we begin wherever you are.

You’ll work directly with Christina, owner and designer of Ruby James Jewelry. With nearly two decades of experience, GIA training, and hands-on work across both design and production, she brings a thoughtful, measured approach to shaping each piece.

Initial Conversation

We start by talking through your ideas, preferences, timeline, center stone preferences, and what you’re drawn to.

This can happen in person, virtually, or over email.

Design & Refinement

A precise 3D model of your ring is created so you can see the design before anything is made in metal. You’ll receive realistic digital renderings to review and request any changes needed to finalize the details.

A 3D-printed model will also be provided so you can experience the scale and proportions in person.

Creation

Once the design is approved, the ring is cast in your chosen metal, set with your center stone, finished by hand, and inspected before it leaves the studio.

FAQ

Here are answers to our most common custom design questions

Most custom engagement rings take approximately 5 to 8 weeks from your initial consultation to delivery. Timing can vary based on design complexity, revision rounds, and current production volume. If you are working toward a specific date, let us know as early as possible and we will do our best to accommodate your timeline.
Because every piece is designed from scratch, pricing varies based on materials, stone selection, and complexity. As a general guideline: Custom engagement rings typically begin around $3,000 using lab-grown diamonds, with natural diamond projects starting higher. Custom bands, pendants, and redesign projects often begin at a lower price point, depending on materials and whether heirloom stones are used. We will provide a detailed quote after your consultation so you know exactly what to expect before moving forward.
Both are real diamonds, chemically and visually identical. The difference is origin.

Lab-grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment and are indistinguishable from natural diamonds to the naked eye. They are also significantly less expensive than natural diamonds, which often means more stone for the same budget. They are increasingly common in custom work and a legitimate choice for any engagement ring.

Natural diamonds are formed over billions of years beneath the earth's surface. They carry a history and rarity that for many people feels significant in the context of an engagement ring specifically. For some clients, that origin matters deeply. For others, it does not factor in at all.

During your consultation we will talk through what matters to you and help you find the stone that feels right.to give more information.
We work with natural and lab-grown diamonds, sapphires, and other carefully selected gemstones. We’re always happy to help you explore and compare options during the design process.
Before your consultation, we have a brief conversation about your preferences, priorities, and budget. Based on that, a curated selection of stones is brought in specifically for your appointment so you can see and compare real options in person. For virtual clients, detailed photos and videos of the selection are shared so you can evaluate your options before making a decision.o give more information.
Absolutely. We are happy to work with your heirloom diamonds, gemstones, or existing jewelry and thoughtfully re-imagine them into something new while preserving their history and meaning, as long as the stones are in good condition and suitable for resetting. We will assess each piece during your consultation to ensure it can be safely used in a new design.
Yes. AI-generated ring images are a great starting point. Bring whatever you have, whether it's a ChatGPT rendering, a Midjourney image, or your own sketches, and we'll use it as the foundation for your design conversation.

One thing worth knowing: AI-generated rings are often visually compelling but not always structurally buildable as shown. Prong placement, stone security, metal weight, and wearability all have to work in the real world. Part of what we do is translate your concept into a design that looks the way you imagined it and is made to last. That translation happens in our 3D design software, so you can see and approve the final design before anything is made in metal.

Please note that we do not replicate existing designs from other jewelers or brands. AI-generated images inspired by a general aesthetic are welcome. Direct copies of another designer's work are not something we are able to produce.
